Eat For Nepal

Eat for Nepal

Seventeen Midcoast Maine eateries have teamed up for Eat for Nepal to donate 10% of their sales for one day each from May 17 to 22 to help fund earthquake relief and rebuilding efforts in Nepal.

The death toll from the 7.8 earthquake is over 7,500, and is expected to climb higher as more bodies are unearthed from the rubble. Over 14,000 have been injured. The UN estimates that eight million people have been affected. Three million are in need of emergency food assistance. Countless survivors have lost their homes, family members, and the livestock that gave them sustenance. Meanwhile aftershocks continue to traumatize survivors.

Personal Historian and owner of Legacy Preserves Meghan Vigeant is organizing the weeklong event and has launched a group called Midcoast Maine Loves Nepal in response to the Nepal earthquake on April 25. Vigeant was in Nepal in 2012 documenting a story about inter-caste marriage.

To kick off Eat for Nepal week, the Camden Public Library will host a slide presentation on “Nepal, Before and After the Earthquake,” featuring photos by Meghan Vigeant and other photographers, combined with post-earthquake images from a photography group in Kathmandu that Vigeant has been in contact with. The slide talk will be on Sunday afternoon, May 17, at 2:00 pm.

Restaurant owners from Rockland to Belfast were eager to jump on board with this project. Rock City Café had been discussing how could they respond to the tragic events even before Vigeant called them. Not only will Rock City donate 10% of sales on Thursday May 21, the staff wanted to donate their tip jar as well. In Good Company will be serving up Nepalese food that Thursday. Despite the tragic circumstances Vigeant sees Eat for Nepal as an opportunity to honor the resilient people of Nepal and their culture.

Proceeds from Eat for Nepal will go to the Nepal Youth Foundation, an organization with a 25-year history in Nepal that has launched a major relief effort to provide immediate help for those most in need as well as long-term rebuilding.
