Casco, Maine - Camp Sunshine is the winner of a new Toyota Sienna Mobility van after receiving one of the top votes in the nationwide Toyota 100 Cars for Good contest on Thursday.
Camp Sunshine, a national retreat in Casco, Maine for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families, prevailed against four other non-profit organizations in Facebook voting on Oct. 10.
“In addition to offering the program free of charge to families since 1984, accessibility to Camp Sunshine is also of critical importance. This new van from Toyota will help us provide our unique services to many more families,” said Matthew M. Hoidal, Executive Director at Camp Sunshine.
He added, “We couldn’t be more appreciative of Toyota for the opportunity and thankful for the outpouring
of support from those who voted for us. Each of our competitors were worthy in their own right, so we feel quite honored.”
Toyota is awarding vehicles to 100 non-profit organizations as part of its 100 Cars for Good philanthropic program, launched on Oct. 1. Each day for 50 days, the contest is showcasing five non-profit organizations at www.facebook.com/Toyota. Visitors to the page receive two votes each day to select two separate winning organizations they feel are most deserving of new Toyota vehicles.
The Oct. 10 vote pitted Camp Sunshine against AniMeals, an animal food bank in Missoula, Mont.; the Turtle Survival Alliance in Fort Worth, Texas; USA Cares, Inc., in Radcliff, Ky.; and the American Red Cross of Southwestern Indiana in Evansville, Ind. Camp Sunshine and AniMeals received the highest number of votes and were declared the two winners by Toyota on Friday.
Camp Sunshine was selected as one of the 250 finalists after submitting an explanation about how a new vehicle would support its work. Hoidal said the Toyota Sienna Mobility van will be used to transport Camp Sunshine families to and from local airports, train and bus stations, and area hospitals.
