Portland Fire Fighters Distribute Glow bracelets to improve visibility on Halloween.

This is the second year that Local 740 Portland firefighters union has made the high visibility bracelets available

Portland, Maine – Portland Firefighters will be distributing 5000 non-toxic glow bracelets in an effort to increase the visibility of trick or treaters this Halloween.

The Portland Fire Department wants every little ghost and goblin to have a safe and fun Halloween night.  Fire Chief Jerome LaMoria says “We want to make sure that Halloween is a fun night and doesn’t turn into a night of real horror for anyone.”

Residents can stop in at any Portland Fire Station between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM on October 31st and pick up a glowing bracelet for each of their children (while supplies last).   After 5:30PM on Halloween firefighters in Fire Trucks and Ambulances will be out on the streets distributing the remaining bracelets to trick or treaters they find.   The Local 740 Portland Firefighters union purchased the bracelets and its members will distribute them on October 31st , with the hope they increase visibility and improve safety to a significant portion of the community.

“Just having our trucks out on the road will hopefully serve as a reminder to drivers to slow down and be aware that kids are out and may not be paying attention to traffic”  continues Chief LaMoria.

The Portland Fire Department wants to make the parents and children to be aware of these additional Halloween safety tips:

o   Only go to well lit houses and never enter an unfamiliar home.
o   Kids should travel in groups and when under age 12 with an adult.
o   Carry a cell phone if possible, and dial 911 for help if you need it.
o   Know where you are, in case you do need to call for help.
o   Have an adult inspect candy for tampering before eating it. Discard fruit or homemade items unless the source is familiar.
o   Always carry a flashlight or some other flameless light.
o   Costumes should be made of light colored, fire proof and if possible reflective material.
o   Use Cross-walks and look both ways before crossing the street.
o   Parents and guardians should establish a curfew and be aware what area their kids are trick or treating.

Where:             Any Portland Fire Station

When:               9:00 AM – 5:00 PM for distribution.
Firefighters will then distribute remaining bracelets on the Streets of Portland, within their district.
