Belfast Garden Club’s public monthly meeting and talk series continue November 19th, featuring a presentation covering the fascinating topic of bats with Annie Kassler. The program is free and the public is encouraged to attend. The speaker will begin at 2 p.m. following a brief public club business meeting beginning at 1 p.m. The afternoon meeting and program take place at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church Parish House, 95 Court St., Belfast.
Local bat enthusiast and expert Annie Kassler will go beyond the myths with her knowledge and experience with bats. Bats are undeservedly one of the most misunderstood and under-appreciated creatures in our world. Many people are surprised to hear that bats play an essential role in both the earth’s ecology and the global economy. In addition to revealing why we should care about bats, she will highlight myths v. facts, demonstrate how to remove a bat from your home, and will display successful bat houses. She will also discuss White Nose Syndrome, which is devastating bat populations in Maine and all of eastern North America.Annie is a speaker with Bat Conservation International and has developed connections with bat scientists and enthusiasts throughout Maine and the United States.
The Belfast Garden Club has promoted the knowledge and love of gardening and civic beautification since 1929. They maintain 12 gardens around the city each year, host Open Garden Days garden tours during the summer, and support education through donations to the Belfast Free Library, Troy Howard Middle School Garden Project, and an annual education scholarship. Each meeting of the Belfast Garden Club is open to the public. The club welcomes new members and volunteers year round.
