“America’s Great Diva” Lillian Nordica November 5 at the Camden Public Library
Michael Lund will present “100 Years of Grand Opera” at the Camden Public Library at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, November 5. The talk is dedicated to Maine’s legendary soprano, Lillian Nordica (1857-1914), from Farmington. Lund has planned a fascinating evening of recorded music from the world of opera and classical song, featuring the music of Mozart, Thomas, Verdi, Puccini, Rossini, Offenbach, Debussy, and Bizet, as well as some vintage recordings of Lillian Nordica in her prime.
This the second in Mr. Lund’s opera presentation. Last May Lund conducted a tribute to Bidu Sayao and Beaumont Glass, and follows up on November 5 with a presentation in memory of “America’s Great Diva,” Lillian Nordica. After opening her career in Europe, “Nordica’s association with the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, during the latter half of the 1890s, lent luster to that galaxy of artists, not since duplicated in any opera house . . . Nordica possessed a voice of liquid purity, exceptional range, and magnificent power. These, combined with a charming personality, rare dramatic gift, and an obsession for patient study, enabled her to win success in a most exacting profession,” say the notes from the Nordica Museum in Farmington.
Some of the other singers who will be featured on November 5 are Enrico Caruso, Nellie Melba, Galli Curci, Luciano Pavarotti, Rene Fleming, and many more. Michael Paul Lund has delivered illustrated music talks all over the country, including libraries, schools, and historical societies. He has done radio commentary on stations coast to coast, including his two-hour specials on WGBH in Boston. He regularly writes criticism for major record companies in the form of liner notes that accompany classical CD re-issues by legendary performers. Many opera recordings will be available for purchase at the event.
