The Mammoths open the season at 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the
conference, while the NESCAC defending champion Mules also were playing
their first game.
Amherst's Maia Noyes had three goals and four assists and teammate
Hannah Gustafson had a key caused turnover in the closing seconds
By the numbers
* Noyes used her speed to score goals and set up plays on the right side. She had her three goals on just four shots.
* Lindsey Call had a fine all-around game with four goals, one
assist, three draw controls, and three caused turnovers for the
Mammoths. Julia Crerend and Isabelle Sennett both had two goals.
* Kendall Smith added two goals and one assist for the Mules.
* Colby had a 29-28 shot advantage, but Amherst goaltender Talia Land stopped 12 shots.
* Sabrina Solow had three caused turnovers for the Mammoths.
* Maddie Hatch had five draw controls, while first-year Grace
Langmuir (pictured) and Grace Crowell both had four draws. Jackie Brokaw
added two caused turnovers.
Game highlights
* The two teams traded leads in the first and second half. The
Mules had leads of 3-1 and went into intermission with a 6-5 margin.
Colby scored the first two goals of the second half for an 8-5 margin,
but the Mammoths tied the game at 8-8 and never trailed again.
* Hatch and Smith scored goals in the first 2:08 of the second half
to give the Mules an 8-5 edge. Amherst, though, had Noyes take over
with two goals and one assist in a 4-0 scoring run for a 9-8 lead.
Crerend and Claire Dunbar had the other goals.
* Banks scored with 14:50 remaining on a fine individual effort to tie the game at 9-9.
* Noyes had one goal and two assists in a 3-0 scoring run to put
Amherst up 12-9. She scored the first goal and then assisted on goals by
Sennett and Gustafson.
* Colby refused to give up and received back-to-back goals from
Grace Crowell on a free-position shot and the first collegiate goal for
Langmuir to cut the lead to one.
* Sennett scored on a free-position shot with 4:38 remaining for
Amherst's final goal and a 13-11 lead. Banks scored her fourth of the
game on a free-position shot with 57 seconds remaining to set up a wild
final minute.
* After winning the draw control, Colby called a timeout with 19.9
seconds remaining. Gustafson came over for a double team and was able to
get a piece of the ball to run out the clock.
* Robyn Pirie and Gwen Geisler also had their first collegiate
goals for the Mules. Crowell finished with one goal and one assist,
while Sasha Fritts had one score.
