Polar Bears and Engineers Settle for 1-1 Draw

Brigit Bergin put in Bowdoin's lone goal against MIT
BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin and MIT women's soccer teams played to a 1-1 overtime tie, but were forced to suspend the contest due to insufficient light after a single overtime period on Thursday evening.

The Polar Bears collect their first draw of the season and sit at 4-2-1 heading into an off weekend.

The Engineers sit at 4-4-2.

How it Happened
  • Brigit Bergin settled a cross pass from Julia Patterson to give Bowdoin the early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. Patterson drew MIT keeper Lauren Ullmann to the right before passing left to Bergin on the opposite side, who settled the ball and toed in her first goal of the season.
  • Kiersten Turner looked to put away Bowdoin's second of the game five minutes into the second half, but Ullmann denied the senior with a diving save on the one v. one.
  • Turner combined with Jamie Hofstetter for another promising look three minutes later, as Turner split a pair of defenders and fed Hofstetter whose shot soared high.
  • Bowdoin continued to pressure with another scoring look from Bergin who snuck the ball through a defender's legs for an open shot, but again saw the ball sail wide of the net.
  • The Engineers got on the board in the 63rd minute to even the game at 1-1.  Shannon Miller collected the ball in front of the goal and passed directly back to Allie Hrabchak who waited at the top of the box. Hrabchak launched a shot over the hands of Bowdoin's Bridget McCarthy and went bar down for the equalizer.
  • Oliva Struckman looked to give MIT the lead with 24 minutes remaining, as the Engineer came streaking down the right side past the defense and uncontested into the box. McCarthy waited until Struckman committed and charged the ball, taking the shot in the body, smothering the scoring chance.
  • With eight minutes remaining in regulation, Turner saw another shot deflect off the hands of Ullmann and ricochet into the crossbar.
  • Bowdoin had a pair of promising looks in overtime, with a header from Bergin and a shot from Maggie Godley both going wide.
  • Ullmann made 10 saves overall in the contest, while McCarthy made four for Bowdoin including a stop in overtime.
  • The Polar Bears outshot the Engineers 29-9 and had a 9-0 corner kick advantage.
