NEW HAMPTON, New Hampshire – Junior Kaitlyn Wilder (Framingham, Mass.)
scored in the 89th minute to lift the Plymouth State University Panthers
to a 1-0 double overtime victory against the University of Southern
Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference field hockey tilt Thursday
night at the New Hampton School.
6-2 overall. The Panthers remain undefeated in Little East Conference action at 4-0. Playing in its second consecutive overtime game and fourth in the last six games, Southern Maine falls to 4-7 with the loss and 1-3 in the conference. Two of the Huskies' LEC losses have come in overtime by the score of 1-0.
Despite outshooting the Huskies 9-2 in regulation, Plymouth State found itself locked in a scoreless game as USM junior goalkeeper Amanda Kasbohm (York, Maine) turned in a stellar performance. The Panthers continued to pepper the Huskies' defense in the first overtime period outshooting USM 9-1, but Kasbohm turned away five shots on goal in the extra time. The Huskies' did send a shot on net toward the end of the first 15 minutes as junior Jennifer Poulin's (Winslow, Maine) attempt was turned away by Plymouth State's sophomore Alivia Bates (Pennsauken, N.J.) in the 84th minute.
Through 85 minutes of scoreless action both teams headed to the second overtime. This time, PSU was able to crack through for the goal in the 89th minute as Wilder notched her third goal of the season.
Kasbohm finished with 14 saves in a strong effort despite the loss. Bates made a pair of saves to earn the win and record the shutout. PSU held a 20-3 advantage in shots and a 10-5 edge in penalty corners.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (2:30 p.m.) against Little East Conference opponent UMass Dartmouth. Plymouth State travels to Western Connecticut on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) for a LEC match up.
