The Mules (0-3 overall) went up 21-17 when Hurdle-Price got to the
right sideline and ran 65 yards for a touchdown with 4:09 left in the
game.
The Cardinals (2-1 overall) did not panic despite needing a
touchdown to go ahead. Wesleyan quarterback Gernard Hawkins had a key
31-yard run on the drive and connected with Devon Carrillo on a 35-yard
touchdown pass for what proved to be the game-winning points with 2:32
remaining.
The Mules had a fine drive start on their own 40-yard line and got
as far as the Cardinals’ 39-yard line before giving the ball over on
downs.
Colby had the better of play in the opening half, but Wesleyan led 10-9 at the break.
Colby kicker John Baron booted a 30-yard field goal for the game’s
first points. The Mules drove 69 yards on 10 plays on the drive.
Wesleyan went ahead 7-3 on a 70-yard drive, culminating in a 1-yard
scoring run from Jaylen Berry with 24 seconds left in the first
quarter.
The Mules went 12 plays and 62 yards on their next drive. However,
Colby had to settle for a field goal attempt and then did not put any
points on the scoreboard after a bad snap from center on the attempt.
The good news was that Wesleyan was pinned deep in its own
territory. A penalty had the Cardinals on the 3-yard line when a bad
center snap got away from Hawkins. After picking up the ball in the end
zone, Hawkins threw an ill-advised pass that was picked off by
first-year Patrick Yale at the 1-yard line and he stepped into the end
zone for an easy Colby score. Baron’s extra point attempt banged off the
right post.
Wesleyan used a 16-play, 71-yard drive in the final 5:08 of the
half. Cardinal kicker Ike Fuchs hit a 27-yard field goal at the end of
the quarter for a 10-9 Wesleyan lead.
Wesleyan went ahead 17-9 when Carrillo scored on a 9-yard run with
11:30 left in the fourth quarter. Colby had a devastating penalty on the
drive after the defense stopped a 4th-and-2 at the Mules’ 27-yard line.
The Mules, however, were called for a roughing the passer penalty and
the Cardinals kept the ball.
Hurdle-Price carried the ball six times on Colby’s ensuing drive.
He had a carry of 20 yards to get the ball to the Wesleyan 19-yard line.
Hurdle-Price scored on a blast up the middle from 1 yard out. The Mules
went for two points to try and tie the game, but a pass attempt was
incomplete.
Colby quarterback Gabe Harrington threw for 125 yards and rushed for 29 yards. The Mules had a 374-371 edge in total yards.
Ian Dickey led the Mules defense with 12 tackles. Harry Nicholas
and Stephen O’Grady did a great job stuffing the inside run and both
finished with nine stops. Sam Friedman, Bryan McAdams, and Ryan Ruiz all
had seven tackles.
