Book Making for Families at the Blue Hill Public Library + Other Library News

Blue Hill, Maine - In celebration of Children’s Book Week, Blue Hill Public Library will be offering a book making workshop for families on Saturday, May 9th from 10:00 AM to noon. Kids and their parents are invited to drop-in and create books of their own. Supplies and guidance will be provided. Participants need only bring their imaginations! Exhibit: Beyond the Page

Brooklin artist, and bookmaker Katherine Greene, will show her artwork in an exhibit in the Blue Hill Public Library’s Howard room cases from May 1st through July 31st. Beyond the Page is an exhibit of artist’s books, journals and guest books. The public is invited to an opening reception for the show on Friday, May 8th in the Howard Room at the Library from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.

Greene began making books through classes at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts offered by Rebecca Goodale.  Speaking with passion about her love of bookmaking, Greene writes: “All aspects of book arts enthrall me, from designing the book and the style of construction to choosing the right materials. In all of my work, the natural world and, specifically, the Maine coastal landscape, are my inspiration.”

About her artist’s books, Greene says:   “Creating one-of-a-kind artist's books allows me to combine, in one art form, many of the things that I enjoy most: drawing and painting; writing poetry; conceiving constructs and working with papers, fabrics, beads and threads.”

Greene is the art teacher at George Stevens Academy and has been teaching for 40 years.  In 2007, she was the recipient of a Maine Educators Fellowship, and in 2010, she nominated the Blue Hill peninsula as an “Imagination Intensive Community,” which won the area recognition of its promotion of the arts with young people. A champion of the arts in education, she underscores the value and the significance of the many forms of artistic expression, stating, “Through art, we each make meaning of our lives and experiences.”

Binoculars Circulated to Patrons

The Blue Hill Public Library will begin circulating three pairs of Nikon 8x40 “Action” binoculars to patrons on May 7th.  The circulation period will be one week and patrons can place holds on them just like any book or video using the Library’s online catalog or by calling the Library at 374-5515. Although children are welcome to use the binoculars they will only be checked out to adults because of the expense involved.  Like other Library items the binoculars can be renewed if there are no holds on them.

The binoculars are on loan from Downeast Audubon, a chapter of Maine Audubon. The group has binoculars for school programs and field trips but decided to try making these pairs available to the community through the Library.

The binoculars come with instructions on how to focus them for each eye so that images will be sharp. They also come with a small book on beginning birding but the Library also has a good selection of bird guides and references.  For more information, contact the Library at 374-5515.

Blue Hill Library Film: Ten Little Indians

The Friends of the Blue Hill Public Library Film Series continues on Thursday, May 14th at 7:00 PM with Ten Little Indians (1965), the second film based on the Agatha Christie mystery, starring Shirley Eaton, Hugh O’Brian and Stanley Holloway. In the film, ten people are invited to a remote snowy mountain and discover that someone is killing them one by one.
