Mad Science: Radical Robotics for Kids

Blue Hill, Maine - Kids in grades 5 to 8 are invited to a hands-on program all about Robots at the Blue Hill Public Library on 3 Saturdays, January 24th & 31st, and February 7th from 10:30 AM to 12:45 PM.  Radical Robotics is fun for girls and boys alike, and registration starts on January 10th on the Library’s internet calendar at bhpl.net. The program will be presented by Mad Science of Maine, a locally owned and operated company that has spent years developing robotics programs for elementary school students.

In the workshop kids will discover how robotic devices use sensors to learn about their environment, how people use robots to get work done, explore the mechanical aspects of robots, circuitry, and programming, and use squishy conductive dough and snap together circuit-board modules to perform exciting functions. They will guide “BeeBots” and “ProBots” through obstacle courses and have the opportunity to build their own robot to take home with them!

The workshop is funded by the National Science Foundation and administered by Cornerstones of Science and the Maine Mathematics and Science Alliance (MMSA), two non-profits based in Maine. Cornerstones of Science works to increase scientific literacy by strengthening public libraries’ capacities to serve as gathering places for informal scientific discovery. MMSA works to support science, technology, engineering and mathematics education from kindergarten through college in Maine.

This workshop is free but registration is required. Participants can sign up using the Library’s interactive web calendar at www.bhpl.net, or call the library at 374-5515.
