Trekkers’ Team Allagash Completes “Fall Festivus” Expedition

Trekkers’ Team Allagash participates in
Midcoast Habitat for Humanity community service project
Trekkers’ 8th grade Team Allagash recently completed a three-day “Fall Festivus” expedition, to kick off their Advanced Trekkers program. This local, short-term expedition provided an outdoor-based experience for the students and mentors that incorporated community service projects, teambuilding, traveling as a group on the Trekkers bus, and the chance to practice consensus based decision-making skills.

Leaving on Friday, October 17, the fifteen students and seven leaders boarded the Trekkers bus and headed to Camp Kieve in Nobleboro, which served as their home base for the two night expedition. After completing their first team food shopping experience, they spent the rest of the day raking leaves around the Camp Kieve grounds.

On day two, the team ventured to Monkey C Monkey Do in Wiscasset for a ropes course, zip line and giant swing challenge, followed by volunteering at Midcoast Habitat for Humanity in Rockport in the late afternoon. On the final day of the expedition, the 8th graders played teambuilding games and spent time learning Trekkers’ consensus-making decision process. Team Allagash ended their weekend trek by apple picking at County Fair Farm in Jefferson.

Having completed this local expedition, Team Allagash students are now better prepared for their 10-
day Advanced Trekkers expedition, which will take place next summer. They will continue to use the consensus based decision-making process in upcoming planning meetings throughout the school year, as the group collectively decides how to include five educational components in their summer expedition. Each Advanced Trekkers expedition incorporates the following educational components: community service, wilderness experience, cultural awareness, environmental stewardship and adventure-based education.

Trekkers is a non-profit outdoor-based mentoring program that connects young people with caring adults through expeditionary learning, community service and adventure-based education. This year, Trekkers will serve more than 200 7th through 12th grade students from the communities of Cushing, Owls Head, Rockland, South Thomaston, St. George and Thomaston.
