Improving Rockland: Demolition Makes Way For New Center For Maine Contemporary Art Building

Rockland, Maine - Demolition started Monday on Winter Street to make way for The Center for Maine Contemporary Art new building. The demolition is being done by local construction company George Hall & Sons out of Rockland, Maine.

The existing building will come down entirely within the first two days, followed by debris removal and site clearing. Once demolition is complete, construction of the new 11,630 square foot Center for Maine Contemporary Art building, designed by Toshiko Mori Architects, will commence immediately. The general contractor for the project is Cold Mountain Builders of Belfast. The new Center for Maine Contemporary Art is expected to open in Rockland in summer 2016.

This new building for Center for Maine Contemporary Art will improve the downtown area of
Rockland. Rockland has made great strives to become a hub for the arts over the years as we have numerous galleries, Farnsworth Museum that's a fixture on Main Street and starting work on a Cultural Plan and Community & Arts Development Strategy.

Center for Maine Contemporary Art is a nonprofit organization advancing contemporary art in Maine through exhibitions and educational programs. Exhibition galleries are open Tues.-Sat. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.and Sun. 1 to 5 p.m. Admission: $5; CMCA members free.
