What else is there for audiences who want movies that don't have lasers, robots or robots with lasers? In 2014, The Grand offers everyone the opportunity to see the latest French and Italian films the way they were meant to be seen – projected on a giant screen, larger than life – movies where the explosions come from the storytelling not the CGI! The line-up of titles for Summer “French/Italian Film Festival” 2014 are as follows:
Friday, July 11th at 7 pm and Saturday, July 12th at 2 pm – The Great Beauty. This year's Best Foreign Film Oscar™ tells the story of journalist Jep Gambardella (the dazzling Toni Servillo – Il divo,Gomorrah) has charmed and seduced his way through the lavish nightlife of Rome for decades, but when his sixty-fifth birthday coincides with a shock from the past, Jep finds himself unexpectedly taking stock of his life, turning his cutting wit on himself and his contemporaries, and looking past the extravagant nightclubs, parties, and cafés to find Rome in all its glory: a timeless landscape of absurd, exquisite beauty.
Saturday, July 12th at 7 pm and Sunday, July 13th at 2 pm – Populaire. Spring, 1958: 21-year-old Rose
Pamphyle can type at extraordinary speeds and has to compete in a speed typing competition in order to keep her job. With Romain Duris (Mood Indigo), Déborah François (L'Enfant) and Bérénice Bejo (The Artist).
Friday, August 15th at 7 pm and Saturday, August 16th at 2 pm – Mood Indigo. From the French director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep comes the surreal and poetic tale of Colin (Romain Duris), an idealistic and inventive young man, and Chloé (Audrey Tautou), a young woman who seems like the physical embodiment of the eponymous Duke Ellington tune.
Sunday, August 17th at 2 pm and 7 pm – On My Way. Now in her early sixties, former beauty queen Bettie (Catherine Deneuve) finds herself jilted by her lover and left alone to deal with the financial problems facing her family's restaurant. What begins as a quick drive to clear her head turns into a full-fledged road trip, and along the way there are chance meetings, an ex-Miss France gala, renewed ties with her estranged daughter and grandson, and possibly, at the end of the road, love.
So bring a friend and share the experience of seeing great movies the way they were meant to be seen – on the big screen – at The Grand’s “French/Italian Films” series, sponsored by Fiore Artisan Olive Oils and Vinegars, beginning in July, 2014.
