AUGUSTA, Maine - Maine's Acadia National Park received national recognition this morning when ABC's Good Morning America announced it had been selected by viewers as "America's Favorite Place".
The month-long contest was promoted on Good Morning America, with votes submitted on the program's Twitter and Facebook feeds using the hashtag #GMAfaveplace.
Acadia emerged as one of five finalists, going up against Lake Tahoe, the Chicago Lakefront, Gulf Shores, Alabama, and Glacier National Park in Montana, with excitement building locally leading up to the announcement live from Jordon Pond during today's morning program.
"The entire world is seeing what we sometimes take for granted," said Governor Paul R. LePage. "Maine is a terrific place to visit, study, and invest. Maine is one of America's most favorite places and Acadia is one of our crown jewels."
The park has long been a favorite destination for both residents and visitors to the state, receiving more than 2 million visitors each year.
"Acadia represents so many of the qualities that make Maine special, we're delighted it has received the national recognition it deserves," said Maine Office of Tourism Director Carolann Ouellette.
Acadia's attractions include approximately 50,000 acres of woods and trails, and miles of stunning rugged coastline. It offers panoramic view form Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on the eastern seaboard at 1,530 feet, and the first to see the sunrise.
The park's 45 miles of carriage trails, originally created for horse-drawn vehicles, are popular with hikers and bicyclists, as is the tradition of afternoon tea with pop-overs at the Jordan Pond House.
