The Grand's screening of "I Am Not Your Negro" on Thursday, March 23rd

Ellsworth, Maine - The Grand presents one of this year's Oscar®- nominated documentaries “I Am Not Your Negro,” screening on Thursday, March 23rd at 7:30 pm as part of the non-profit performing art venue's mission to enrich the lives of people in Downeast and Eastern Maine by presenting diverse, unique, high-quality programs that provide entertaining, artistic, educational and social experiences. Ticket prices for the film are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and students, and $6 for Grand members and are General Admission seating.

Based on a never-finished book by the incendiary American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, and social critic, James Baldwin., the documentary had its origins in 1979, when Baldwin wrote a letter to his literary agent describing his next project, “Remember This House.” The book was to be a revolutionary, personal account of the lives and successive assassinations of three of his close friends- Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. At the time of Baldwin's death in 1987, he left behind only thirty completed pages of his manuscript. Now, in his exciting, provocative new documentary, master filmmaker Raoul Peck envisions the book James Baldwin never finished. The result is a radical, up-to-the-minute examination of race in America. It is a film that questions black representation in Hollywood and beyond. And, ultimately, by confronting the deeper connections between the lives and assassination of these three leaders, Baldwin and Peck have produced a work that challenges the very definition of what America stands for. With narration by Samuel L. Jackson.

The Grand to launch new digital projector with 3D screening of Disney Pixar’s “Up”

A still from Disney Pixar’s “Up.” The Grand is showing the movie in 3D, free to the public, to celebrate the launch of their new digital projector.

ELLSWORTH – The Grand Theater in Ellsworth will host a “Projector Premiere” on Saturday, February 11, and show the 3-D movie, Disney Pixar’s “Up.” The movie screening will celebrate the success of a $165,000 fundraising campaign to purchase a brand-new digital projector, sound system and screen for the historic theater. This event is open to the public and admission is free with donations accepted. Doors open at 7 for the 7:30 showing.

The new digital projector system allows The Grand to dramatically improve picture quality and sound, offer current release films sooner, show musicals and stage plays through simulcast, include subtitles for National Theater Live broadcasts, and the ability to show films in 3D – the only one of its kind in Hancock County.

The Grand has raised $153,000 of the total $165,000 needed to complete the project, leaving $12,000 to raise.

The Grand Board of Director’s President Carla Haskell says “This is truly community supported performing arts and film. To our projector campaign donors who have had the vision to support arts in Ellsworth: thank you! We’re almost there, but it’s not too late for individuals or businesses in the community to participate and make a contribution to this historic campaign. This projector will serve everyone in our community.”

The new digital projector system is the biggest renovation project undertaken by The Grand. The projector and screen are being replaced and a new speaker system is being installed. The projector also requires a special room built to protect it from dust and moisture. That portion of the campaign was supported solely by Mrs. Edith Dixon. The new screen, made possible through a donation from Larry Piazza of Coastal Eye Care, is replacing the original 1938 screen.

Top donor, The First Bank President Tony McKim says “First National Bank is delighted to support The Grand and this wonderful project. Since 1938 The Grand has provided audiences with amazing experiences in the arts that have been vital to the fabric of our communities. We are proud to be part of it!”

To help The Grand meet its final goal of $12,000 for the projector campaign, you may send a contribution to the projector fund at The Grand, or give online at www.grandonline.org.

Verdi’s Nabucco Live in HD at The Grand

Ellsworth, Maine - The “Live in HD” high-definition simulcast series of productions and hi-def encores from The New York Metropolitan Opera continues its 2016 – 2017 season at The Grand on Saturday

January 7th at 1 pm with a presentation of Giuseppe Verdi’s Nabucco, starring the legendary Plácido Domingo who brings another new baritone role to the Met under the baton of his longtime collaborator James Levine. Tickets are $27.00 for adults, $25.00 for Grand members and $20.00 for students (15 and under).

“The Met: Live in HD,” the Metropolitan Opera’s award-winning series of live transmissions offering a significant portion of the Met season to DownEast and MidCoast Maine communities, continues its eleventh season with two giants of this most dramatic of musical arts overcoming and transcending their own health issues to present one of the Italian composer's most celebrated pieces. The success of Verdi’s third opera, a stirring drama about the fall of ancient Jerusalem at the hands of Nebuchadnezzar (aka “Nabucco”), catapulted the 28-year-old composer to international fame. The music and Verdi himself were subsumed into a surge of patriotic fervor culminating in the foundation of the modern nation of Italy. Specifically, the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves (“Va, pensiero”), in which the Israelites express their longing for their homeland, came to stand for the country’s aspirations for unity and that exciting era in Italian history, the Risorgimento, or “Resurgence.” And now, this production of Verdi's work is brought to melodic life by Ukranian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska (“Abigaile”), American tenor Russell Thomas (“Ismaele”) and American mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton (“Fenena”) with support from a production team that includes Revival Stage Director J. Knighten Smit, Set Designer John Napier, Costume Designer Andreane Neofitou and Lighting Designer Howard Harrison.

“The Met: Live in HD series” is made possible by a generous grant from its founding sponsor, The Neubauer Family Foundation. Global corporate sponsorship of The Met: Live in HD is provided by Bloomberg. Transmission of The Met: Live in HD in Canada is made possible thanks to the generosity of Jacqueline Desmarais, in memory of Paul G. Desmarais Sr. The HD broadcasts are supported by Toll Brothers, America’s luxury home builder®.

Saariaho’s L'Amour De Loin Encores in HD at The Grand

Ellsworth, Maine - The “Live in HD” high-definition simulcast series of productions and hi-def encores from The New York Metropolitan Opera continues its 2016 – 2017 season at The Grand on Saturday December 17th at 12 pm with an encore of its December 10th simulcast of Saariaho’s

L'Amour De Loin, one of the most acclaimed stage works of the 21st century. Tickets are $27.00 for adults, $25.00 for Grand members and $20.00 for students (15 and under).

“The Met: Live in HD,” the Metropolitan Opera’s award-winning series of live transmissions offering a significant portion of the Met season to DownEast and MidCoast Maine communities, continues its eleventh season with Kaija Saariaho’s breakthrough opera which finally has its Metropolitan Opera premiere in a dazzling new production by Robert Lepage, featuring glimmering ribbons of LED lights that extend across the length of the stage and over the orchestra pit. The opera transpires in a medieval setting and distills its narrative down to a minimalist plot that focuses on the inner lives of its protagonists. Saariaho discovered the kernel for the opera’s story in the figure of Jaufré Rudel, one of the earliest troubadours, who lived in the first half of the 12th century. Only a handful of his poems have survived, and little is known for certain about him beyond that he was a prince of Aquitaine in the southwest of France. But the tales that circulated posthumously about his exploits made Jaufré popular with later aficionados of the art of courtly love, and 19th-century poets like Robert Browning took a fresh interest in him. And now, LePage's production of Saariaho's work is brought to melodic life by soprano Susanna Phillips, bass-baritone Eric Owens and mezzo-soprano Tamara Mumford with support from a production team that includes Associate Director Sybille Wilson, Set and Costume Designer Michael Curry, Lighting Designer Dominique Bruguière as well as Lightscape Image Designer Lionel Arnould. Susanna Mälkki conducts.
