Thomaston Public Library presents Family Stories: Families Writing Together with Dena Davis, Founder and Director, Stories by the Sea

Thomaston, Maine - The Thomaston Public Library is pleased to offer a Family Stories: Families Writing Together program beginning Monday, January 27th from 5:30-7:00 pm with Dena Davis, founder and director of Stories by the Sea. This writing program will be an opportunity for families with children ages eight and up to attend a six-week session of writing workshops together to explore the themes of identity and place.

Young writers and their family members will have a chance to share and write about individual, family, and community identities. With hands-on activities incorporating artifacts, photographs, childhood-neighborhood maps, and letters, participants will record memories, share stories, and create poems as a group and individually.

The group facilitator, Dena Davis, led a variety of writing workshops this past year at Aldermere Farm, Sweet Tree Arts, and the Thomaston Library as well as a Young Authors’ Camp at the Rockland Library
through the Southern Maine Writing Project. She has been an educator for 12 years in California and Maine and has worked with children of all ages for many, many more. She holds a B.A. in English from Stanford University and a M.A. in Education from University of California, Berkeley.

The highlight of her teaching career has been working with young writers, helping them discover, develop, and celebrate each one’s unique voice, and encouraging them to share with a larger audience at their annual Authors’ Teas. She became a National Writing Project Fellow/Teaching Consultant in 2003 through the Southern California Writing Project (SCWriP), led in-service workshops for her colleagues in Northern and Central California, and enjoyed leading a Creative Writing Club for 4th-6th graders at St. George School in Maine. She believes strongly in process, imagination, experimentation, and play, and that each of us has a story (or two) to tell.

Registration for this writing program is required as space is limited to six families. Please call the library at 354-2453 to sign up and reserve your space today! If you have specific questions about the program itself, please call Dena Davis at 354-0614.
