An excellent event for children and families, the Winter Ecology Festival is free to all and has indoor and outdoor events throughout the morning. This year’s festival features talks, crafts, and activities to celebrate the best of the Maine winter woods. Snacks and hot drinks will be offered throughout the day inside the Ross Center for guests who would like to warm up between outdoor events.
The schedule of events is:
10:00 AM – 11:00 AM
· Central Maine Astronomical Society uses solar scopes to track and observe the winter sun, outdoors behind the Ross Center.
· Family snowshoe hikes led by Merryspring volunteers depart from the Ross Center.
· Winter nature crafts and other children’s activities inside the Ross Center.
11:00 AM – 11:30 AM
· Dave Smith of Sparky’s Honey and Maple in Hope demonstrates how tapping sugar maple trees is done for collecting sap in front of the Ross Center.
11:30 AM – 12:00 PM
· Maine Master Naturalist Volunteer Deb Smith presents on observing and identifying winter plants. Starting in the Ross Center, the program will head outside to locate and identify specimens.
This year’s festival is aligned with Pen Bay Chamber’s annual Winterfest in Camden, which starts the same day at 12:00 noon in Harbor Park. Guests are welcome to enjoy the “best of both worlds” and experience the Winter Ecology Festival before heading downtown to enjoy the ice sculptures, skating, and other activities.
