Wildlife Migrations on Maine's Coastal Islands‏

Camden/Rockport, Maine - Beth Goettel of the Coastal Island National Wildlife Refuge will lead a presentation on how bird and other wildlife populations migrate through the Gulf of Maine. The talk will take place at Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, January 28 at 12:00 noon.

Using current research conducted by the Coastal Island National Wildlife Refuge, Goettel’s presentation will expound upon how advancements in monitoring technology have led to new understandings in what happens during migration and the winter season, as well as how migration patterns are affected by food supplies, development, and other factors.  Beth will also address the recent interest in offshore wind energy, and how bird populations would be affected by turbine installation projects.

Goettel has a degree in Wildlife Management from the University of Maine at Orono and has worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for over 20 years.  She has been the manager of the Maine Coastal Islands and Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuges since 2008.  She resides in South Thomaston.
