UPDATE: Camden Structural Fire Knocked Down
8:05AM UPDATE: Camden Fire Chief Chris Farley said that the fire appears to be accidental, but cautioned homeowners not to leave wood stoves burning when leaving town. The fire was called in at 12:45 p.m. Jan. 23.
Farley said the fire at the home of Linda and Martin Zeigler appears to be accidental. He said it started in the area of the base of the chimney, located in the lower crawl space at the back of the house.
"The clean-out door of the chimney had fallen out of place and there was a pile of dimensional lumber in front of the clean-out door, including trim boards, 1 by 4s and things like that," said Farley. "It's possible it started as a chimney fire, and that created enough heat to displace the clean-out door as the silicone holding the door in place was broken and the door was displaced just to the side."
Farley said the wood stove connected to that chimney was burning prior to the fire, and nobody was home.
"I talked to the homeowners, and they were at JFK switching planes to go to Florida," said Farley. "I’m not sure why the stove was left going, but it’s not a good idea to keep it going if leaving town, or maybe have someone check it periodically. They are on their way back to Maine now."
The next-door neighbor saw what appeared to be snow blowing in the backyard, but then realized the wind was not blowing hard enough to kick up snow, went outside to investigate and discovered the smoke at the Zeigler's home.
Farley said after calling 911, the neighbor went next door to check if anyone was home.
"She tried to see if they were home, and opened the unlocked slider and called inside. She did not know the Zeiglers were not home, out of town," said Farley. "She did the right thing by not going inside the home and waiting for us instead."
