Governor LePage to Celebrate New Tomato Crop at Backyard Farms

Madison, Maine - On Wednesday, Governor LePage will deliver celebratory remarks to congratulate Backyard Farms on the reopening of their greenhouses and a subsequent new crop of tomatoes.

Backyard Farms is the largest grower of tomatoes year-round in all of New England. They cultivate about 450,000 plants that produce around 27 million pounds of tomatoes in a year.

Governor LePage is proud to partner with Backyard Farms in the endeavor to see private sector business succeed in order to continue to drive Maine’s economy upward.

The company applauds the administration’s prompt and creative assistance - for the way the Governor’s Office and the Department of Labor stepped in and worked through a flexible unemployment process. That effort, combined with the company’s financial payments and full family insurance coverage, resulted in very slight overall lost employee income, as well as very few non-returning employees.

Already in January, the farm is back in full operation with a robust team of 200 employees. The 42 acres of plants are thriving in the restored greenhouses and tomatoes are back in the stores.

WHEN: 10:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 8, 2014
