Tracks the top occupations and sectors hiring; skills, degrees, experience most in demand
Augusta, Maine – The Maine Development Foundation (MDF)December 5th released the second of their quarterly jobs reports titled Jobs in Maine: Online Job Postings by Industry, Occupation, Skills, and Education. The report covers the third quarter of the year, and the organization plans to continue the series with an end of year report as well. The data is culled from thousands of online job listings and social media sites as well as the data reported by the federal Department of Labor. MDF has partnered on this project with John Dorrer, Senior Advisor for Jobs for the Future and former Acting Commissioner and Director of the Center for Workforce Research and Information of the Maine Department of Labor.
“The quality and quantity of our workforce is critical for Maine’s success, and the more information we have about what’s going on, particularly in real time, the greater impact we can have collectively,” said Maggie Drummond-Bahl, one of the Program Directors who worked with Dorrer on the report. “This data provides insight into the jobs employers are working to fill right now in Maine, and the skills, experience and, in some cases, degrees that employers are seeking.”
The third quarter report also explores “churn”, or activity, in the labor market through the number of hires and separations – a way to look at activity in the labor market beyond the net number of jobs added.
Said John Dorrer, "After job losses and economic stagnation during the recession, the Maine economy may be showing a slight revival. As the pace of recovery picks up, workforce availability and quality will be an important determinant for sustaining growth. Effectively matching the skills of the workforce with the needs of employers remains paramount. More timely and detailed demand side data about the jobs employers are hiring for is essential.”
The full report can be found on the MDF website at http://www.mdf.org/publications/Jobs-in-Maine-Online-Job-Postings-by-Industry-Occupation-Skills-and-Education/664/. This report follows the release of the first installment in a two part report by MDF and the Maine State Chamber of Commerce in the “Making Maine Work” series which explores data and strategies related to workforce quality and quantity. The first in that series, addressing quantity of workforce, was released on November 19th. The second in the series is expected in Spring 2014.
