Rockland, Maine - A ballet in two acts, based on The Nutcracker and Mouse King with music by Tchaikovsky, performed by the Mark Morris Dance Group.
Though the ballet's narrative is based on the original text by E.T.A. Hoffmann., choreographer Mark Morris' version is inspired by tthe aesthetic of Charles Burns, an American graphic artist known for his comic-book images of fantasy and horror. Set in a dark American suburb in the 1960s, Barbie dolls, go-go boots, G.I. Joe soldiers, and a gender-bending cast contribute to the campy thrill of The Hard Nut.
Filmed live in Brussels in 1991, the film features accompaniment from the Symphony Orchestra and Chorus of the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie with Musical Director Sylvain Cambreling.
Winner of BEST NUTCRACKER by Viewer's Choice in Ovation TV's Battle of the Nutcrackers three years in a row.
