**South Portland BMV branch will be closed October 24th and 25th for the move; the new Scarborough office will open for business at 8:00am on Monday, October 28, 2013.**
South Portland, Maine - Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap has announced that the South Portland Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) located at the Maine Mall will be relocating to 200 Expedition Drive, Suite G/H in Scarborough. The South Portland BMV branch will close on October 24th and the new office in Scarborough will open on Monday, October 28, 2013 at 8:00am.
"Relocating this BMV office has been a significant priority for several years," said Secretary Dunlap. "However, finding a new site in the general proximity of the current location that meets customer needs as well as the needs of this Department, while staying on budget, has proven to be a difficult undertaking. I think that the space we've found in Scarborough meets the majority of our expectations and customers will be happy with the improvements the new location has enabled us to make."
The current BMV office at the Maine Mall in South Portland is the second most active branch of the 13 locations statewide. Serving 60,000 customers annually, it is grossly undersized for the volume of customers it assists. The lobby only accommodates seating for 34 and the parking lot is inadequate and inconvenient for customers and staff, especially during the holiday seasons.
The new site is 3.5 miles from the South Portland location and offers easy access from Rt. 1 and the Turnpike, which makes it a convenient location for public transportation. The office will have adequate on-site parking for customers and employees (100 spaces) and 9 dedicated parking spaces for road testing and parallel parking. There will be seating for 59 customers in the lobby as well as a public restroom, which was not previously available at the South Portland location.
As the South Portland Office will be closed on October 24th and 25th, customers are encouraged to visit the Portland BMV Office located at 125 Presumpscot Street, Unit 4. A list of all available locations can be found at the following link: http://www.maine.gov/sos/bmv/locations/index.html. Customers may also want to review the BMV website at http://www.maine.gov/sos/bmv/index.html to see if their transaction may be taken care of online .
