Nominations for the awards were solicited statewide beginning in early August. Once received, the nominations were subject to a blind review process. Out-of-state, ANA colleagues identified McCue and MacMaster as the award winners by.
Director of Quality and Patient Safety at Mid Coast, McCue received the prestigious Agnes E. Flaherty Leadership Award. Each year, ANA-Maine gives this award to a nurse leader who demonstrates leadership, courage, and dedication in his or her practice. Among several distinguished qualities, the recipient must be able to value and empower others to work towards a common goal and be able to think in terms of change and renewal.
“The patients, staff, and providers of Mid Coast are extremely fortunate to have Barb McCue on our team,” said Deb MacLeod, RN, Vice President of Nursing and Patient Care Services. “A strong leader and patient advocate, her dedication and expertise directly contribute to the high standard of care that we are so well known for.”
Upon receiving the award, McCue commented, “It is such an honor to be recognized by my colleagues. I truly feel special to be part of such a wonderful team.”
Nominated for her expertise, leadership, and unwavering commitment to patient satisfaction, Mid Coast operating room nurse MacMaster received the Sister Consuela White Spirit of Nursing Award. The award is presented annually to a registered nurse who demonstrates the spirit of nursing by the care, concern, respect, and knowledge that he or she demonstrates in interactions with patients and families, coworkers, students, the profession, and the community.
“A quietly effective leader, Andrea listens closely, holding her judgment at bay in order to gain a deep understanding of issues and opportunities to improve workflow and patient safety,” said MacLeod. “The ANA could not have selected a better candidate.”
“Having Mid Coast nurses receive these respected honors speaks highly of the quality of nursing care that we have here,” said Lois Skillings, RN, Mid Coast Health Services President and CEO. “Congratulations to both Barb and Andrea, as well as the entire nursing staff for your hard work and dedication that makes such a difference in the lives of the patients we serve.”
In addition to this most recent honor, Mid Coast Hospital is recognized by the national ANA as a Magnet hospital, an honor bestowed on only 6% of the hospitals in the country for exceptional nursing and patient care. Magnet hospitals are known to have better patient outcomes, patient satisfaction, and nursing satisfaction, as well as lower nursing staff turnover.
