Mid Coast Health Services Honors Rehabilitation Patient and Clinicians

Brunswick, ME — Mid Coast Health Services honored three staff members and an exemplary patient in a celebration during National Rehabilitation Week in September. The annual event serves to recognize the extraordinary contributions of more than 80 rehabilitation professionals working in the Mid Coast Health system and celebrate the successes that community members have made through the rehabilitative care they have received.

“Each of the 2013 recipients embodies the spirit of the therapy services available here at Mid Coast,” reports Dory Holmes, MPH, OTR/L, Director of Rehabilitation Services at Mid Coast Hospital. “Each of the recipients are committed to providing an excellent patient experience and high quality rehabilitation services, but they are also committed to being resources and mentors to their peers.”

This year, Physical Therapist Carol Kelley with Mid Coast Senior Health Center, Physical Therapist Tina Phillips with Outpatient Rehabilitation Services, and Occupational Therapist Ruth Stevenson from CHANS Home Health Care were each awarded “Clinician of the Year” in their respective clinical areas.

The event also recognized John Conlan as “Patient of the Year,” an award given to an individual who has received rehabilitation services and has demonstrated outstanding determination in facing his or her recovery.

Conlan was hospitalized for a stroke in 2011. After receiving acute care in Portland, he was admitted to Bodwell Nursing and Rehabilitation Center to continue his recovery. He then received therapy at home from CHANS Home Health Care and later outpatient therapy at Mid Coast. In 2013, Conlan once again followed the continuum of care to recover from a broken hip. Today, he receives outpatient physical and speech therapy services and reports that he is "happy and doing well."

At the awards event, Mid Coast Health staff noted that throughout Conlan’s health challenges, he has worked hard on his recovery with strong support from his wife, Judy.  When asked what keeps him going, he replied “I don’t like to fail,” but Judy was quick to point out that, “His success is due to his incredible attitude and his never-ending gratitude.”

Rehabilitation is a medical specialty that helps restore people affected by potentially disabling disease or traumatic injury to the best possible level of functioning and health. It helps minimize physical or cognitive disabilities and assists individuals in returning to purposeful, productive lives. An integral part of healthcare, rehabilitation is a key component in providing patients with positive outcomes.

Mid Coast’s continuum of rehabilitation care is comprised of Mid Coast Hospital’s Inpatient and Outpatient Rehabilitation, Mid Coast Senior Health Center’s Bodwell Center, Mid Coast Medical Group–Orthopedics, and CHANS Home Health Care.
