“Sustainable Maine”
“Sustainable Maine” Series Nominated for New England EMMY Awards
Orono, ME – A collaboration between Maine Public Broadcasting Network (MPBN) and Maine EPSCoR at the University of Maine has just resulted in three Emmy nominations for the newest documentaries in their “Sustainable Maine” series. The series consists of half-hour television productions about a new way that Maine researchers combine biophysical sciences with social science and economics to study the drivers affecting Maine’s changing landscape.
“Sustainable Maine” takes a look at Maine’s involvement in a new branch of scientific inquiry known as “sustainability science.” Researchers from Maine EPSCoR’s Sustainability Solutions Initiative (SSI), which is based at the University of Maine’s Senator George J. Mitchell Center but also involves 10 other colleges and universities, are working in tandem with communities and stakeholders to address pressing sustainability issues and helping to find solutions that preserve Maine’s quality of place. The TV series is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF).
MPBN was recently notified that three of these documentaries have been nominated for Emmy awards. “Pools, Policies and People – Maine’s Vernal Pools” was nominated in the category of Outstanding Environmental Program, “Basket Trees” was nominated in the category of Historical/Cultural Program/Special, and “Saving Our Lakes” was nominated in the category of Societal Concerns. The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony on June 1 in Boston, MA.
In the coming weeks, MPBN is re-airing four episodes of the series:
Desperate Alewives - Thursday May 9, 2013 8:30PM
Saving Our Lakes - Thursday May 16, 2013 8:30PM
Basket Trees - Thursday May 23, 2013 8:30PM
Pools, Policy & People - Thursday May 30, 2013 8:30PM
In addition, three more episodes in the “Sustainable Maine” series are currently being produced by MPBN and Maine EPSCoR for broadcast in fall 2013. These include “Return of a River” about researchers from the University of New England studying the Saco River Estuary, “Culvert Operations” where University of Maine researchers are studying the effect of weather events on the many culverts in the state, and “Mapping Maine’s Future” about how researchers from the University of Maine are using new mapping tools and working with stakeholders to allow for “smarter” development across the state.
This on-going series is supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to Maine EPSCoR at the University of Maine. For more information or to view these episodes on the web, visit http://www.mpbn.net/Television/SustainableMaine.aspx
EPSCoR is an acronym for NSF’s Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research, and Maine EPSCoR at the University of Maine received a $20 million, 5-year grant to advance Maine’s research capacity and promote innovation while providing benefits to society. This is accomplished through an extensive network of statewide collaborations that involve over 350 researchers and students, as well as 200+ community-based stakeholders.
