Ellsworth, Maine - London’s National Theatre will broadcast the highly-anticipated West End production of The Audience, with Helen Mirren reprising her Academy Award winning role as Queen Elizabeth II. The production will be broadcast live from London's Gielgud Theatre and beamed directly to The Grand’s big screen at 2:00 pm on Thursday, June 13.
For sixty years Elizabeth II has met each of her twelve Prime Ministers in a weekly audience at Buckingham Palace – a meeting like no other in British public life – it is private. Both parties have an unspoken agreement never to repeat what is said. Not even to their spouses. The Audience breaks this contract of silence – and imagines a series of pivotal meetings between the Downing Street incumbents and their Queen. From Churchill to Cameron, each Prime Minister has used these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional – sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive. Politicians come and go through the revolving door of electoral politics, while Elizabeth remains constant, waiting to welcome her next Prime Minister.
Acclaimed playwright and screenwriter Peter Morgan (“Frost/Nixon”, “The Damned United”) and the Academy Award-winning actress Mirren reunite following their collaboration on the critically-acclaimed movie sensation “The Queen.”
“This is the best of British acting brought live to Ellsworth,” said Grand Executive Director, Zoe Alexis Scott. “Just like the Metropolitan opera real-time performances, it’s an opportunity to engage in cultural offerings from around the world without having to live in New York or London.”
