Trekkers Invites Maine Cyclists to Join ‘Pedal to the Port’ Coastal Ride
Trekkers, a youth mentoring nonprofit in the Midcoast, is inviting bicycle enthusiasts to participate in its fifth annual Pedal to the Port bicycle ride. Offering three coastal routes along the St. George peninsula, the benefit ride is welcome to all riders from casual to expert.
Held Saturday, June 8th, Pedal to the Port is an ideal training ride for the Trek Across Maine. The 35 and 45 mile routes feature an ocean-side trek that includes a rest stop at the historic Marshall Point Lighthouse in the village of Port Clyde. The event also offers a scenic family-friendly 12 mile option. All routes begin and end at the Oceanside West (formerly Georges Valley) High School in Thomaston. Riders will receive a Pedal to the Port T-shirt and be welcome to enjoy the post-ride cookout luncheon.
Registration is free to riders participating in a team of four or more members. Registration is $25 for an individual rider. Trekkers is asking that all participants raise a minimum of $75 in pledges. Riders can register online by visitingwww.pedaltotheport.com or at Oceanside West High School the morning of the ride, beginning at 8:00 a.m. The ride will begin at 9:00 a.m.
“This is a beautiful ride, led by happy caring people, for a great organization,” commented one previous Pedal to the Port participant. Attracting more than 125 riders in 2012, Pedal to the Port is a hallmark fundraising event for Trekkers. Proceeds from the event will benefit Trekkers’ youth mentoring programs.
Founded in 1994, Trekkers is a nonprofit, outdoor-based mentoring organization that connects young people with caring adults through expeditionary learning, community service and adventure-based education. Each year, the organization serves more than 180 youth and involves more than 100 adult volunteers from the communities of St. George, Thomaston, Cushing, Rockland, South Thomaston and Owls Head.
