BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Four different players scored as the University of
New England cruised to a 4-0 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory
over Gordon College in field hockey action Thursday evening (Oct. 1) at
the Big Blue Turf.
The result ends a two-game skid for the
Nor'easters, who move to 7-4 overall and 4-1 in CCC play. The Fighting
Scots fall for the fifth consecutive outing, back to 2-7 on the year
(1-3 CCC). UNE is now 12-1 in the last 13 meetings between the teams,
and 14-6 all-time.
Nicole Matarozzo slapped home a feed from Desirae LeBlanc in the 11th minute to get things started for Big Blue, and Becky Zakorchemny punched in a rebound for her first marker of the season 2:30 later (13th minute) to quickly double the margin.
UNE went up 3-0 less than one minute into the 2nd half, as Hannah Buckley sent a dangerous ball into the middle from the left wing and Vonde Saunders chased it down for a slight redirection between the goalie's pads.
Kersey Boulay capped the scoring output in the 54th minute, pushing a penalty stroke into the left side of the cage.
The
Nor'easters, who finished on top of sizable advantages in both shots
(21-5) and penalty corners (12-3), received four saves from Holly Smith to preserve the shutout.
For Gordon, which is slated to entertain Endicott College (4-1 CCC) on Saturday (11 a.m.), Shannon Hicks turned in nine stops.
UNE will host Trinity College (Conn.) on Sunday (12 p.m.) in a non-league match.
