Portland Public Library opens “The Year in Photos” and “Our Places, Our Times : Portland Through the Decades” at First Friday Art Walk

January 2, 2015 – 5:00-8:00pm
Portland, Maine - Portland Public Library will open two exhibits in its lower level Cultural Center for First Friday Art Walk on Friday, January 2nd from 5:00-8:00pm.

The Year in Photos

This exhibit, in the Lewis Gallery, features 30 large photographs from Portland Press Herald photojournalists.  These journalists traversed every corner of Maine in 2014, traveling to Fort Kent to cover sled dog racing and to the Pleasant Point and Indian Township reservations for a major series on the Passamaquoddy. They documented news events ranging from Maine’s role in the Market Basket dispute to this year’s midterm and state elections. They rose at dawn with a milkman, witnessed the joys and heartbreak of Little League, and watched immigrants become U.S. citizens. They photojournalists were there for every moment, capturing the stories of Mainers one frame at a time. This collection showcases the year’s best work by Press Herald staff.

Our Places, Our Times : Portland Through the Decades, 1930s – 2000s.

This exhibit will be on display in the Main Library’s Lower Level Hallway for the entire 2015 year.  A series of photos pulled from the Portland Press Herald Still-Film Negative Collection: Portland Public Library Special Collections, this exhibit shows the collective history and experiences of Portland’s people over the past eight decades – from the time of trolley cars running down Congress Street in the 1930’s, to break dancing performances in the 1980’s, to events happening in recent history.
