Special Book Sale Weekend! July 17 through July 20
The Friends of Rockport Public Library and the volunteers of the Camden Public Library are joining forces to provide a one-of-a-kind book sale event! Thousands of quality books, DVDs, CDs, puzzles, and other literary material will be available. The Rockport and Camden libraries each traditionally have book sales on separate summer weekends but are combining weekends to offer book-lovers a special weekend-long opportunity July 17 through July 20.
The Rockport Public Library book sale will be held at the Mid Coast Recreation Center on Route 90, as usual. The sale will begin with the traditional “Friends Only Sale” on Thursday evening, July 17, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. Members can preview the sale and buy a select number of books. A year’s membership is $10 for individuals, $15 for families, and $50 for businesses. Membership dues can be paid ahead of time at the library (check or cash) or at the book sale. The sale at MRC will be open to the public on Friday, July 18, from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm; on Saturday, July 19, 8:00 am until noon and also 1:30 to 3:00 pm; and the sale concludes on Sunday, 8:00 to 11:00 am.
The booksale at the Camden Public Library will be held under the tents at the library, on Main Street as usual. Doors will open, so to speak, on Friday morning, July 18, at 10:00 am. The sale runs Friday, 10:00 to 6:00; Saturday, July 19, 9:00 to 6:00; and Sunday, July 20, 10:00 to 4:00. The Camden Library’s book sale is held on the same weekend as the annual Harbor Arts summer arts festival in the Amphitheatre, Harbor Park, and Library grounds. The booksale is planned and run by library volunteers and all sales benefit the library’s book funds and operations. There will be thousands of books for sale, with a heavy representation of cookbooks, maritime books, and of course hardcover fiction and many other categories as well.
Special “Pirate Adventures” for children will take place at MRC during the Big Booksale Weekend, hosted by the Friends of the Rockport Public Library. At the members’ preview sale on July 17, from 5:00-7:00 pm, visit the children’s area and make pirate crafts. On Friday, July 18, from 9:00 to 10:00 am, join author Liza Gardner Walsh showcasing her new book, Treasure Hunter’s Handbook, followed up by pirate rock-painting at 10:30. From 1:00 to 4:00 pm, local pirate Cyd Viscous and crew will be on hand for a special pirate play! On Saturday, July 19, from 8:00 to 11:00 am, there will be crafts, games, and pirate brain teasers. Author Lucinda Hathaway closes out Saturday from 1:00 to 3:00, sharing her stories about a Japanese boy who was shanghaied in 1901 and traveled to Maine. Her booksare Takashi’s Voyage: The Wreck of Sindia and Around the World: Takahashi Sails Home, which can be purchased at the sale.
For the first time, the Friends of the Rockport Library are sponsoring an Old Town Kayak raffle, currently on display at the library. Tickets are only $5.00 and can be purchased at the Library and at the book sale.
