Portland Holds Candlelight Remembrance in Honor of Nelson Mandela

What:  Candlelight Remembrance in Honor of Nelson Mandela

When:  Tuesday, Dec. 10 from 5:00 - 5:30 p.m.

Where: Monument Square

Purpose: To honor the life and legacy of Nelson Mandela

Portland, Maine - Mayor Brennan and City of Portland leaders invite the Portland community to join them in honoring the life and legacy of South African anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela.

During the service, which will include brief remarks, a remembrance ceremony, the South African National anthem, and a poetry reading, Portlanders will be asked to light a candle in honor of the revered anti-apartheid leader who died Thursday at age 95.

"While this is not the only recognition of his life that the City will participate in," said Mayor Brennan, "we do want to join the rest of the world in remembering and celebrating Nelson Mandela, and the values he fought for. "

The Mayor and Portland Public School officials will also take this opportunity to announce an initiative that honors former President Mandela's belief in the power of education.
