Hooked rug by Stacey Van Dyne

Searsport, Maine, December 13, 2013 – This winter, Penobscot Marine Museum hosts a series of workshops and demonstrations with the theme of their winter exhibition Underfoot: Footwear, Hooked Rugs, In the Cellar and Below Decks.

Saturday, December 21: Rug-hooking demonstration with Sarah Nickerson, 11:00 am to 1:00pm. Sarah Nickerson comes from a family of talented rug hookers, and hooks and sells her rugs in Searsport at the Rug Rat.

Saturday, January 18: Rug-hooking demonstration with Stacey Van Dyne, 11:00 am to 1:00pm Stacey Van Dyne has been hooking rugs since 1974 and hooked two rugs for Jamie Wyeth based on his paintings.  She is the President of the Northern McGown Teacher’s Workshop, 2nd Vice President of the National Guild of Pearl K. McGown Hookrafters, and Director at Large of the North American Rug Hooking Museum.

Saturday, January 25: “Living on the Schooner Bonnie Lynn” talk by Captains Earl and Bonnie MacKenzie about life below decks.  In 2005 Captains Earl and Bonnie MacKenzie did a trans-Atlantic crossing in the Bonnie Lynn from  the Virgin Islands, via the Azores to Ireland and Scotland, then south along the coast of Portugal.  On the return trip to the Caribbean they stopped in Madeira and the Canaries before returning to the Grenadines.   Their homeport is Islesboro, Maine.

Saturday, February 1: Rug-hooking demonstration with Susan Barnard, 11:00 am to 1:00pm.  Susan Barnard has been hooking rugs since 2008.  Prior to hooking, Susan was a painter and so she thinks of rug hooking as painting with wool.  She designs all of her own rugs, and uses recycled fabric and non-toxic dyes.
