The Met’s HD Live Brings “Maria Stuarda” To The Grand

Ellsworth, Maine - The Grand presents Donizetti’s “Maria Stuarda” as part of the New York Metropolitan Opera series of high-definition simulcast performances. Mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato stars in the virtuosic bel canto role of the doomed Mary, Queen of Scots in Gaetano Donizetti’s MET opera premiere on Saturday, January 19th at 1pm- with a running time of 2 hours and 46 min.

One of the composer’s three great "Tudor queen" operas, (the other two being “Anna Bolena” and
“Roberto Devereux”), “Maria Stuarda” stands out as the only one where the Queen meets her end with peace of mind. Her vocal line soaring above the chorus of mourners in the finale is an unforgettable musical manifestation of her spiritual triumph. This inspired David McVicar who directs the Met premiere production, with roles led by mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato as Maria, soprano Elza van den Heever as Elizabeth( in her Met debut), and tenor Matthew Polenzani as Robert, Earl of Leicester.

Bass Matthew Rose (Giorgio), baritone Joshua Hopkins (Guglielmo) , and mezzo-soprano Maria Zifchak (Anna) fill out the starry cast , with the vibrant, luminous score in the hands of Maurizio Benini.  McVicar’s creative team includes set and costume designer John Macfarlane, lighting designer Jennifer Tipton, and choreographer Leah Hausman.
