Maine Will Receive $1.3 Million In National Coastal Wetland Conservation Grants

Collins, King Announce $1.3 Million in Land Conservation Grants

 WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and Angus S. King, Jr. (I-ME) today announced that two projects in Maine will receive $1.3 million in national coastal wetland conservation grants from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

 The Penobscot River Restoration Trust will receive $1 million for dam removal and the restoration of habitat on nearly 300 acres of the Penobscot River, improving wetland habitats along the river for native sea-run fish. The Harpswell Heritage Land Trust and the Maine Coastal Heritage Land Trust will receive $300,000 in support of the White Island Stevens/Wilson’s Cove Project to acquire a portion of White’s Island for conservation purposes.

 “The landmark Penobscot River Restoration project prioritizes the needs of the local communities, important economic uses, energy generation, and the restoration of the great historic fisheries of the river.  In addition, the White Island/Wilson’s Cove project will protect coastal wetlands and resources within the ecologically important Casco Bay Estuary,”said Senators Collins and King. “These grant investments will assist these partnership efforts in restoring and maintaining Maine’s natural resources for the benefit and enjoyment of generations to come.”
