Blue Hill Public Library Play Reading January 16th

Blue Hill, Maine - The public is invited to participate in the Blue Hill Public Library Play Reading Group on Wednesday, January 16th from 6:30 to 9:00 PM at the Library, and every 3rd Wednesday of the month until summer. The play selected for this month is The Beauty Queen of Leenane, set in the Irish village of Leenane, Connemara in the early 1990s and takes place entirely in a poorly lit, run-down kitchen.

The play is about a 40-year-old spinster who takes care of her self-centered and manipulative 70-year-old mother, while sisters are married and have their own lives. Maureen, who has a history of mental illness, and is trapped in a dysfunctional relationship with her mother, gets one last chance for romance but it ends tragically. The play is full of “deceptions, secrets and betrayals,” and provides surprise after surprise for the audience.

The group welcomes inexperienced and experienced readers alike. The only criteria are the love of plays and the joy of reading them aloud among like-minded theater fans. For further information, contact the Blue Hill Library at 374-5515 or Michael Donahue at 374-5248 (or Donahue.mg@gmail.com).
