Augusta, Maine - Kate Shaffer, author of Desserted: Recipes and Tales from an Island Chocolatier published by Down East books, will be at Lithgow Public Library on Thursday, February 7 at 6:30 p.m. Copies of her books, as well as a selection of her company’s Black Dinah chocolates, will be available for purchase at the program.
A bake sale featuring recipes from Desserted will also be held that evening, with proceeds benefiting the Friends of Lithgow Library’s Capital Campaign. The author talk and bake sale are free and open to the public, and will be held in the Reading Room.
Shaffer and her husband moved to remote Isle au Haut nearly seven years ago. Once there, they were inspired to open a chocolate company, Black Dinah Chocolates, and cafe featuring delicious chocolate and fresh Maine ingredients. Now their products are shipped all over the world, and their island cafe is a Maine destination. Desserted is an armchair travel log and cookbook all in one describes the realities of island life in Maine, from the close-knit island community to the difficulties of getting precise ingredients to the shop by ferry. Desserted features more than forty-five of Shaffer’s delicious recipes for her renowned chocolates and chocolate-inspired recipes from her seasonal café.
Shaffer was recently named one of the top ten chocolatiers in North America by Dessert Professional magazine.
“There are no second chances in an island kitchen,” Shaffer writes. “If you forget something at the mainland grocery, guess what? You do without. If the farmer doesn’t have that case of produce picked in time for you to make the morning mailboat, guess what? You spend the boat ride over figuring out how to sell some very high-paying inn guests on cuisine sans vegetables.”
