GORHAM, Maine – Junior Tevin Reid (Dorchester, Mass./Bunker Hill)
ran onto a well-played long ball from MacQuille Walker (Hamilton Parish,
Bermuda/Berkeley Institute) in the sixth minute to score the
game-winner as the Thomas College Terriers defeated the University of
Southern Maine Huskies 3-0 in a non-conference men's soccer game
Wednesday evening at Hannaford Field.
Reid broke through for his fourth goal of the season with a well-time run onto a lofted ball from Walker. Walker sent the booming pass over the top of the Huskies' defense and Reid touched the ball once before beating USM sophomore goalkeeper Simon Hulbert (Bar Harbor, Maine/Mount Desert Island) to the far post.
The Terriers remained in front of Southern Maine 1-0 before adding two more goals in the 31st and 34th minute. Junior Kyle Fletcher (Monmouth, Maine) headed in his second goal of the season off of a cross from junior Jeffrey Nagy (Old Saybrook, Conn.) to double the Terrier advantage, and less than three minutes later sophomore Josh Emard (Lebanon, Maine/Noble) converted a penalty kick for the 3-0 final.
Husky sophomore Yousif Altewaijry (Al Koubar, Saudi Arabia/Al Husson School) had Southern Maine's best opportunity for a goal in the 78th minute, receiving a flat ball across the box after a strong individual effort from Charlie Mull (Portland, Maine/Cheverus). Altewaijry was one-on-one with Thomas senior goalkeeper senior Joakim Stearnas (Stockholm, Sweden/Bromma Gymnasium), but Stearnas came off of his line to make a big save to keep the clean sheet.
Stearnas finished with three saves to earn the shut out and his third win of the season. Hulbert made six saves in a strong effort. TC held a 19-11 advantage in shots and a 5-4 lead in corner kicks.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (4:00 p.m.) when it travels to Plymouth State for a Little East Conference game. Thomas College returns to North Atlantic Conference action on Saturday (3:30 p.m.) when it travels to Green Mountain College.
