PHS Partners With Lee Auto Service Department for Internships
A new internship opportunity for Portland High School students with the Lee Auto Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Service Department provides students with hands-on experience
working with cars.
Lee is the only auto shop that currently partners with Portland High School, according to Andrea Levinsky, Portland High School extended learning opportunities coordinator. “This internship provides an invaluable experience for students,” she said. “Students work directly with service staff members and gain one-on-one mentorship in the field.”
This internship allows students who may not have the opportunity to enroll in the automotive program at the Portland Arts and Technology High School (PATHS) and students who hope to begin the program in the future to be able to get hands-on experience working with cars. Lee had one Portland High intern last year and has two Portland High interns this year.
Broderick Rutledge, a sophomore planning on enrolling in the PATHS Automotive Program, likes the internship because “it's something I enjoy, [and] the people that I work with also play an important part in it, too. They make the internship even more enjoyable.”
Francis Costin, a senior, said, “It’s really interesting to learn auto skills on a variety of different vehicles, and I am also excited to be able to apply the skills I learn at Lee Auto to my car later in life.”
The internship benefits Lee too. “It’s a great opportunity for us to build relationships with Portland students who have interest in automotive,” Dustin Lee said. “These students get real exposure to what it’s like to work at our dealership. Hopefully they like it and will think of us when it comes time for them to start their careers.”
Portland High School is eager to partner with more businesses, including more in the automotive field. Any businesses interested in getting involved through job shadows, mock interviews, internships or career panels, please contact Andrea Levinsky, Extended Learning Opportunities Coordinator at levina@portlandschools.org or 207-874-8250 x7425.

Portland Fire Department Accepts FEMA Grant
PORTLAND, Maine --
The Portland Fire Department accepted an Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) from FEMA in the amount of $681,819. The grant award allowed the City to purchase a new 2019 Pierce Enforcer Heavy Rescue Vehicle equipped and operated as a special operations company.
The new truck is substantially larger than its predecessor, a 1999 Freightliner PT Custom, and provides for a significant improvement in the Fire Department’s ability to carry the specialized equipment needed for disciplines including vehicle extrication/stabilization, hazardous materials, weapons of mass destruction, rope rescue, confined space rescue, water rescue and structural collapse. The vehicle is the only staffed heavy rescue in the State of Maine, and is considered a regional resource for other departments for these types of incidents.
Fire Chief Keith Gautreau said, “not only does this new truck save taxpayer money but it allows us to carry the tools needed to perform all of the specialty functions our firefighters are trained to perform. I’d like to thank FEMA for awarding us this grant. The citizens of greater Portland are fortunate to have this vehicle in operation.”

February 7: Poetry Reading by Jason Grundstrom-Whitney at Thomaston Public Library
Thomaston, Maine - Thomaston Public Library is proud to present a reading from poet Jason Grundstrom-Whitney, whose first book of poetry, Bear, Coyote, Raven, was recently published by Resolute Bear Press and has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and a National Book Award.
A bear can be a person, though most prefer to be bears. Did a coyote ever lead you to a story? Have you ever lost yourself in the blue-black eye of a raven? Imagine three such creatures transitioning from people to animals and back, walking along a desert highway dressed in their finest three-piece suits: ribbon shirts, jeans, and moccasins, foraging a city alley for supper, or sharing stories under a starlit sky. If you listen closely, you could learn something from these three magical creatures. In his first book of poems, Jason Grundstrom-Whitney introduces us to numerous variations of this American trio. A bear can be a person, though most prefer to be bears. Did a coyote ever lead you to a story? Have you ever lost yourself in the blue-black eye of a raven? Project Canopy grants available for community forestry projects in Maine towns
Up to $100K Available for Community Forestry Projects in Maine Towns
AUGUSTA, Maine – Project Canopy, the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s community forestry program, will award $100,000 in grants to local governments, municipalities, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations that support efforts to develop and maintain long-term community forestry programs.
Funded by the USDA Forest Service, Project Canopy grants are available in two categories: planning and education grants and tree planting and maintenance grants. Typical grants range from $6,000 to $8,000 and require a 50-percent cost-share with cash or in-kind services. Since 2015, Project Canopy has awarded more than $500K in funding for community forestry projects.
Project Canopy is a program of the Maine Forest Service under the Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry. It encourages communities to develop project proposals that support sustainable community forestry management, increase awareness of the benefits of trees and forests, and increase the health and livability of communities through sound tree planting and maintenance.
Project Canopy Director Jan Ames Santerre provided recent examples of community projects that can benefit from Project Canopy grants. Projects of note in 2019 include Augusta ($10,000), Greenville ($3,951), and Bridgton ($8,000) to plant trees in downtowns and town parks; and Wells ($10,000), Lubec ($7,850), and Denmark ($3,000) for management planning for community forests and related educational developments. “In addition to helping communities with general maintenance planning, these grants allow towns to respond to threats from invasive pests such as the emerald ash borer. They can also support community efforts to create more inviting downtowns and neighborhoods, and improve Maine’s cities and towns through the multitude of economic, environmental and social benefits urban and community trees provide,” said Santerre.
Planning and education grants have a maximum award of $10,000, while planting and maintenance grants have a maximum award of $8,000. To be eligible to apply for a 2020 assistance grant, all applicants must attend a grant workshop before applying. The grant workshop will be held on February 12, 2020, via the web. The workshop will cover such topics as grant writing, project development, sustainable community forestry management, and grant administration.
Grant applications are due by 5:00 p.m., March 6, 2020.
To learn more about the Project Canopy Assistance program and to sign up for a grant workshop, contact Project Canopy Director Jan Ames Santerre at (207) 287-4987.

Lyme cases reported to Maine CDC in 2019 reach record high
More than 2,000 cases identified
AUGUSTA – The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) received a record number of Lyme disease case reports from health providers in 2019, with 2,079 cases as of January 16, 2020. This rash occurs in just over 50 percent of patients in Maine, usually within three to 30 days of a tick bite. Other symptoms include fever, chills, headache, fatigue, and muscle and joint aches, with later signs of illness including arthritis and heart problems. Lyme disease cannot be transmitted from human to human.
"While we can't yet speculate about the reason for this increase, these new numbers emphasize the
