The Mules improve to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the NESCAC, while the
Polar Bears drop to 2-4 and 1-2 in the league. The two teams will meet
again Saturday at 7 p.m. in Brunswick.
Game highlights
* Stahlhuth scored his first goal of the season and his fourth
career goal with 9:05 to play. Mule tri-captain Michael Rudolf won a
face-off to the left of Bowdoin goalie Alex Zafonte. Rudolf won a loose
puck behind the net and came out to get the puck to Stahlhuth in the
slot for the score.
* Colby tri-captain Phil Klitirinos closed out the scoring with
four seconds remaining with an empty net goal. Griffin Fadden had the
assist on the play.
* The Polar Bears scored first at 7:24 of the opening period on a
nice rush up the ice by Austin Ricci, who ended up scoring shortly
afterward. Ronnie Lestan stole a puck from a defender and pushed a quick
pass to Spencer Antunez, who one-timed a pass to Ricci coming in on
goal for the tipped shot.
* The Mules also had a nice transition on their first goal from Cam
MacDonald, who ended up with the assist on the play. In a battle behind
the goal to the left, a Bowdoin defenseman kicked the puck backwards
directly to MacDonald, who pushed a quick pass to Kienan Scott for a
tough angle shot from the left side.
* Colby went up for the first time at 2-1 on Michael Decker's first goal
of the year and his fourth career score. Klitirinos came from behind
the net on the play to get the puck to Decker, who tried to squeeze a
pass in the middle. The puck was knocked away by Zafonte, but Decker was
still charging in and stuffed the puck in at the left post.
* Bowdoin tied the game just 2:36 later on some strong checking
work by Camil Blanchet, who got the secondary assist. Blanchet twice won
a puck on the boards, with the second win going to Michael Brown behind
the net. Brown came in around the right post for a wraparound pass to
Daniel McMullan at the left post for a one-timer in front.
By the numbers
* Colby goaltender Sean Lawrence (pictured above) finished with 34
saves, while Zafonte also played well in his first Colby/Bowdoin game
with 31 stops.
* The two teams had no penalties in the opening period, but combined for 10 (5 each) in the third period.
* Colby has won four of the last five games against the Polar Bears, including a sweep of the games last year.
