The win snapped the Polar Bears' three-game losing skid, and improved their overall mark to 3-5-0. The Huskies fell to 1-8-3 overall. The two sides will meet again at Bowdoin on January 23.
Zafonte had a relatively easy time over the first two periods seeing just 10 shots on goal. In the third period, the Huskies peppered Zafonte with 13 shots, but were unable to find an equalizer. The shutout was the second of the season for the rookie goaltender, and leveled his record at 2-2.
Geary tallied the only goal at 14:02 of the opening period knocking in the rebound of his own shot. Geary was set up for the initial drive by senior Spencer Antunez (Cleveland, Ohio) and rookie Jack Bliss (Chelmsford, Mass.), but was thwarted by USM rookie goalie Anthony D'Aloisio (Frisco, Texas). The rebound came out in front and Geary fired into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
Bowdoin finished the game with a 27-23 edge in shots on goal. D'Aloisio, this week's New England Hockey Conference Rookie of the Week, continued his fine play making 26 saves before being lifted for the extra attacker with 1:15 to play. Both teams were 0 for 2 on the power play.
The game was the final one of the fall semester for the Huskies who are off for final exams and the holidays. They will resume play on January 6 when they travel to New England College. The Polar Bears are at home this weekend for NESCAC league games against Tufts University on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Connecticut College on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
