No. 23 women's squash splits a pair of matches against Vassar and Haverford

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The No. 23 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team got strong play at the top of the lineup in a 5-4 loss to No. 29 Vassar and a 6-3 victory over No. 30 Haverford on Saturday.

The Bobcats (2-2) went undefeated at the No. 1 through 4 positions and got key contributions from a pair of a seniors to gain a split on the day against the Brewers (9-2) and Fords (2-2).

Bates dropped a very close 5-4 match to the Vassar College Brewers in the morning.

Sophomore Luca Polgar (Budapest, Hungary) swept Hannah Nice 3-0 (12-10, 11-4, 11-6) at the No. 1 position and junior captain Vicky Arjoon (Georgetown, Guyana) won easily with a 3-0 (11-2, 11-4, 11-8) victory over Sydney Nemphos.

First-years Maeve O'Brien (Essex, Conn.) and Katie Manternach (Brooklyn, N.Y.) continued their outstanding starts to their careers. O'Brien won 3-0 (11-2, 11-1, 11-4) over Min Wu at the No. 3 position and Manternach defeated Alessan Pilkington 3-0 (11-7, 11-9, 11-5) at the No. 4 position.

Bates fell just short in the match as they remain undermanned until four key players return in January. Sophomore Nubia Beasley-Bartee (Chicago, Ill.) gave a great effort at the No. 7 position, coming up just short by a count of 3-2 (4-11, 11-7, 5-11, 11-8, 11-7).

The Bobcats bounced back in the afternoon to take down No. 30 Haverford 6-3.

Once again, Polgar, Arjoon, O'Brien and Manternach all won 3-0 and this time the Bobcats won at the No. 5 and 6 positions as well.

Senior Hannah Conner (Groton, Mass.) took down Olivia Franco 3-0 (11-3, 11-8, 11-4) at No. 5 and senior Cata Robert (Riverside, Conn.) defeated Grace Fioramonti-Gorchow 3-0 (11-5, 11-8, 11-0) at the No. 6 position.

Bates is back in action Friday, Jan. 12 when the Bobcats host Middlebury at 6:30 p.m.
