Southern Maine Falls at Bowdoin 3-0

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The undefeated Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team picked up its first shutout of the season blanking the University of Southern Maine 3-0 in non-conference play Tuesday night at the Sidney J. Watson Arena.

The Polar Bears extended their season-opening unbeaten string to five games, improving to 4-0-1 overall.  The Huskies dropped to 3-7-0 on the season.  The two sides will meet again this coming Sunday (5:00 p.m.) at the USM Ice Arena.

Bowdoin opened the scoring with a tally 6:40 into the game. With the puck in the crease and USM junior goalie Britney Evangelista (North Smithfield, R.I.) unable to cover it, sophomore Tala Glass (Glencoe, Ill.) poked home the first goal.

Late in the second period senior Jill Rathke (Burlington, Vt.) intercepted a breakout pass by the Huskies in neutral territory and found junior Marissa Fichter (Duxbury, Mass.). Fichter stick handled through the defense and crossed into the USM zone, skating to the low side of the right faceoff circle. Fichter wristed an uncontested shot nearside top shelf.

With one minute remaining in the period, second-year forward Jess Cloutier (Bedford, N.H.) pulled the puck off the left boards and skated center. The sophomore directed a shot towards the far post and put Bowdoin up 3-0.

The Polar Bears finished the night outshooting the Huskies 44-6.  Evangelista finished with 41 saves to mark the fourth time on five outings she has recorded 40 or more saves.  Junior Sophia Lattanzio (Montclair, N.J.) stopped all six USM shots to record her first shutout of the season.

Before Sunday's rematch, Southern Maine will return home to face Johnson and Wales University on Friday (4:00 p.m.).  Bowdoin takes on JWU on Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
