Maine Lobster Festival's Sea Princesses Tour Atwood Lobster

Spruce Head, Maine- The next stop on the road to the coronation of the 2016 Maine Sea Goddess is a tour of Atwood Lobster in Spruce Head.

"In 1920, Bill Atwood's grandfather, a lobster fisherman from Nova Scotia, moved his family to Boston where Bill's father soon started a wholesale lobster business on Atlantic Avenue. In 1962, Bill Atwood ventured out on his own and launched the Atwood Lobster Company.

In May of 2011, Atwood Lobster Company was purchased by Mazzetta Company, LLC based in Highland Park, IL. Mazzetta Company specializes in frozen seafood products, one of it's largest items being frozen lobster. By purchasing this wonderful facility on the coast of Maine, Mazzetta Company has moved into a position of complete vertical integration."

This was a great opportunity to learn firsthand about the lobster industry.  There is much that happens before that lobster roll gets to your table.  It is the lobster companies that supply the bait fish to the lobstermen early in the morning and are there when the lobstermen return with their catch.  After leaving the the lobster boat the lobsters are kept in large holding tanks that must be kept at precise temperatures and Ph balance.  From there the lobsters are loaded into temperature controlled trucks for shipment down the street or around the world.

Though this was a great learning experience and a fun morning for the girls it was also under the watchful eye of the judges who will decide which of these girls will become the 2016 Maine Sea Goddess.
