ELLSWORTH – The Grand announces “Diary of a Chambermaid" and “Mustang” as the first two films in its Summer French Film Festival screening Friday, July 22nd through Sunday July 24th. Ticket prices are for general admission seating for each movie and are $7 for adults, $6 for seniors, and $5 for Grand members.

What else is there for audiences who want movies that don't have lasers, robots, or robots with lasers? In 2016, The Grand offers everyone the opportunity to see the latest French films the way they were meant to be seen – projected on a giant screen, larger than life – movies where the explosions come from the storytelling not special effects. The July line-up of titles for Summer “French Film Festival” 2016 are:

Friday, July 22nd at 7 pm and Saturday, July 23rd at 4 pm – “Diary of Chambermaid.” In this sumptuous drama, adapted from the novel by Octave Mirbeau by the director of "Farewell My Queen" and "3 Hearts", a chambermaid (Lea Seydoux - "SPECTRE," "Blue is the Warmest Color") deals with the cruelty and perversions of the upper class while working at a bourgeoisie home in 19th century Normandy. In time, she enters into a relationship with a fellow servant who may be deeply troubled. French with English subtitles.

Saturday, July 23rd at 7 pm and Sunday, July 24th at 5 pm – “Mustang.” Five free-spirited teenaged sisters splash about on the beach with their male classmates. Though their games are merely innocent fun, a neighbor passes by and reports what she considers to be illicit behavior to the girls’ family. The family overreacts, removing all “instruments of corruption,” like cell phones and computers, and essentially imprisoning the girls, subjecting them to endless lessons in housework in preparation for them to become brides. As the eldest sisters are married off, the younger ones bond together to avoid the same fate. The fierce love between them empowers them to rebel and chase a future where they can determine their own lives in French-Turkish filmmaker Deniz Gamze Ergüven’s debut, a powerful portrait of female empowerment and the French nominee for this year's Best Foreign Film Oscar™. Please note that while this is considered a French film, it is in Turkish with English subtitles.

So bring a friend and share the experience of seeing great movies the way they were meant to be seen – on the big screen – as The Grand screens “Diary of Chambermaid" and “Mustang,” the first two films in its Summer French Film Festival, the weekend of Friday, July 22nd through Sunday July 24th.
