GORHAM, Maine -- The visiting University of Massachusetts Beacons
used solid front row play to defeat the University of Southern Maine
Huskies 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-10) in a Little East Conference match
Tuesday evening at the Warren Hill Gymnasium.
The victory was the second straight for the Beacons, who
will retain a share of first place in the conference. The Beacons
improved their record to 6-10 overall and 3-1 in LEC play. The Huskies,
winners in their previous two matches, fall to 10-13 overall and 1-3 in
conference play.
The first set was a nail biter throughout before the
Beacons prevailed. The Huskies let a
seven-point lead slip away in the
latter stages of the second set to fall behind 2-0. It was all UMB in
the final set.
Southern Maine could not match UMass Boston's strength
and size up front. Five UMB players tallied five or more kills, led by
junior Julia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) who had 10 kills.
As important, the Beacons frustrated the Huskies' attack and racked up
14 total blocks (4 solo, 20 assists).
In addition to her team-high 10 kills, Murphy also had two solo blocks, six block assists and five digs. Freshman Eileen Shi (San Francisco, Calif.) contributed nine kills and seven digs, while rookie Haley Diedrick (Canton, Mich.) and junior Colleen Koen (Centerville, Mass./Barnstable) had six kills apiece. Koen also had a solo block and four blocking assists.
Junior setter Pepper Baker (Tallahassee,
Fla.) quarterbacked the Beacon offense passing out 26 assists and
coming up with a team-high 13 digs. Junior libero Elizabeth Glavan (Edina, Minn.) had 11 digs in the back row.
Sophomore Jess Williamson (Goffstown, N.H.) had 11 kills and nine digs for the Huskies. Junior setter Megan Nilson (Granby, Conn.) posted a double-double passing out 17 assists and digging up 15 balls. Rookie defensive specialist Cammi Baumann (Salida, Calif./Joseph Gregori) added 11 digs.
Southern Maine will take part in the Wellesley
Invitational this Saturday playing Ithaca College (12:00 p.m.) and
Nazareth College (2:00 p.m.) in a pair of non-conference matches. UMass
Boston will be on the road on Friday to take on Williams College (7:00
p.m.).
