Bowdoin College Football Looks To Extend Winning Streak Against Tufts This Weekend

SATURDAY'S GAME
The Bowdoin College football team will look to get its first win of the 2015 season on Saturday when they travel to Medford, Mass., to take on Tufts University. It will be the 110th meeting between the teams, the third-longest of any of Bowdoin's rivalries, trailing only Bowdoin-Colby and Bowdoin-Bates

For the second consecutive year, the Jumbos have started 2-0 while Bowdoin currently stands at 0-2 this fall.

POLAR BEAR PREVIEW
Bowdoin again was victimized by a slow start in week two against Amherst, as the Jeffs used a 24-point first quarter outburst to jump ahead in an eventual 37-6 victory. The Polar Bears have been outscored 44-6 in the opening half in their first two games this season.

Among the conference statisical leaders, sophomore wide receiver Nick Vailas is currently tied for the lead in the NESCAC with 14 catches this season. Junior quarterback Tim Drakeley is sixth in the league at 206.5 yards passing per contest. Reeder Wells is tied for second in the NESCAC with 20 tackles this fall. Through two games, Bowdoin is the least penalized team in the conference with 11 penalties for 72 yards.

SCOUTING THE JUMBOS
Coming off a four-win season a year ago, Tufts has managed to earn a pair of tightly-contested wins to open the campaign, defeating Hamilton (24-21, OT) and Bates (17-16). Last week against the Bobcats, Tufts overcame a 14-0 halftime deficit as Jack Cooleen won NESCAC Offensive Player of the Week honors thanks to a seven-catch, 178-yard receiving performance that rallied the Jumbos to the win. Tufts ranks fifth in the conference in both total offense (363.0 yards/game) and total defense (346.5 yards/game). Chance Brady is third in the NESCAC in rushing (83.0 yards/game) and Alex Snyder stands third in passing (234.0 yards/game).

Saturday's contest will be the first home game of the season for Tufts, who went 4-0 at home in 2014.

LAST MEETING
Last year in Brunswick, Tyler Grant set a new school record with 43 carries en route to a career-high 208 yards rushing and four touchdowns as Bowdoin earned a 33-20 win over Tufts at Whittier Field (view highlights). Bowdoin's 463 yards of total offense were the most by the Polar Bears since they rolled up 564 against Wesleyan in 2009. Bowdoin also dominated the time of possession, holding the ball for 38:25 in the game. Branden Morin had 10 tackles for Bowdoin while Brendan Lawler had nine and a fumble recovery. Jack Doll had 349 yards passing for the Jumbos, who received 13 tackles apiece from Michael DeFeo, Mike Stearns and Tommy Meade.

SERIES HISTORY
Saturday will be the 110th meeting between the two long-time rivals with Tufts holding a 58-49-2 advantage in the all-time series. Despite the Tufts lead, Bowdoin had carried the series of late, winning five straight and eight of the last eleven games between the schools. This is the longest winning streak for Bowdoin in the history of the rivalry.

The most noteworthy matchup in recent memory came in 2011, when Bowdoin became the first team in NCAA football history to return two 99+ yard interceptions for a touchdown in the same game.
