#2 Bowdoin Silences UMF in Non-Conference Battle

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington (5-3) field hockey team had a difficult time getting past Bowdoin College (8-0), who ranks second in the nation, on Tuesday evening with a 4-0 loss in non-conference action.

Bowdoin opened each half with a pair of quick goals and used penalty corners to its advantage.  In the third minute, Rachel Kennedy scored the first goal of the contest with the assist coming from Kelsey Mullaney immediately following a penalty corner.

Five minutes later, Kimmy Ganong doubled the Bowdoin lead after setting up the Polar Bears offense on a corner. Mullaney lined a shot on goal but her shot was deflected by UMF keeper Patty Smith (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) and Ganong was there to knock in the rebound.

In the second half, Bowdoin added two more goals in a four-minute span. Ganong tallied her second goal of the contest in the 43^rd minute with Kennedy contributing the assist. Liz Znamierowski added the final goal of the game for the Polar Beavers in the 48^th minute.

Smith had a busy evening with 16 saves for the Beavers. Bowdoin's Clara Belitz and Liz Rill combined to earn the shutout.

UMaine-Farmington returns home on Saturday to host Thomas College at 10:30 a.m.
