Preliminary Report Shades Light On Plane Crash At Knox County Regional Airport

Owls Head, Maine - On Friday November 16th at 4:44pm a small Cessna 172 single engine plane crashed at Knox County Regional Airport after striking a pickup truck on take off. A preliminary report shades light on what may of caused this crash that killed two UMaine students and an alumni.

WCSH6.com reports A preliminary report of a small plane that hit a truck during takeoff and crashed near the Knox County Regional Airport indicates the truck driver followed proper safety procedures.



The National Transportation Safety Board says the driver, Stephen Turner, used a common radio frequency to announce his intention to cross the runway before the fatal crash last week. The three people on the plane were killed.

The report doesn't indicate whether Turner felt or heard the collision.

The plane had also lost a key part when it struck the truck. The Cessna 172 single-engine plane had lost its right elevator, also known as the right horizontal stabilizer, when it struck the pickup. The report said the loss of the stabilizer amounted to substantial damage to the plane.

Those who lost their lives in this horrible accident was David Cheney, 22, of Beverly, Mass., Marcelo Rugini, 24, who was a foreign exchange student residing in Nobleboro, Maine and was from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil and William “B.J.” Hannigan, from South Portland, Maine, who graduated in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. The three were currently or were Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity brothers.
